Tooth extraction—especially wisdom tooth removal—is a common dental procedure. While it may sound intimidating, proper aftercare can make a world of difference in your healing process, comfort, and overall outcome.

At Harris Park Dental, we ensure your extraction is performed with skill and care—but your recovery also depends on what you do afterward. Here’s a simple guide to help you heal smoothly and avoid complications.

✅ Do’s After a Tooth Extraction

  1. Rest and Take It Easy
Give your body time to heal. Rest for at least 24 hours after the procedure and avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity.
  2. Keep Pressure on the Gauze
Bite gently but firmly on the gauze placed by your dentist to help stop bleeding. Replace it as needed, usually every 30–45 minutes.
  3. Apply an Ice Pack
Reduce swelling by placing a cold pack on the outside of your cheek—15 minutes on, 15 minutes off—for the first 24 hours.
  4. Eat Soft, Cool Foods
Stick to soft foods like yoghurt, smoothies (with a spoon!), mashed potatoes, or soup. Avoid anything hot or spicy in the first couple of days.
  5. Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water to help your body heal. Just remember—sip from a glass, not a straw.
  6. Follow Your Dentist’s Instructions
Take prescribed medications as directed, including any antibiotics or pain relief. Follow all aftercare advice provided by your dentist.

❌ Don’ts After a Tooth Extraction

  1. Don’t Use a Straw
Suction can dislodge the blood clot that forms in the socket, leading to a painful condition called dry socket.
  2. Don’t Smoke or Drink Alcohol
Both delay healing and increase your risk of infection or complications.
  3. Don’t Touch the Area
Avoid poking the extraction site with your tongue, finger, or any object. Let the area heal undisturbed.
  4. Don’t Eat Crunchy or Hard Foods
Avoid chips, nuts, crackers, and similar foods for at least a few days, as they can irritate the wound or get stuck in the socket.
  5. Don’t Skip Oral Hygiene
You can brush your other teeth, but avoid the extraction area for 24 hours. After that, rinse gently with warm salt water to keep the area clean—not mouthwash, unless advised by your dentist.

🦷 How Long Does It Take to Heal?

Most people recover from a simple tooth extraction in about 7–10 days. Wisdom teeth or surgical extractions may take a bit longer. Swelling usually peaks around day 2–3, then gradually subsides.

If you experience:

  • Severe pain after 3 days
  • Continued bleeding
  • Swelling that gets worse
  • Pus or signs of infection
